BRIEF: Mother dead, toddler unharmed in Mid-City crash

June 10--A woman was killed early Wednesday when her car flipped over in a Mid-City neighborhood. Her toddler, who was strapped into a car seat, miraculously was unharmed.

The woman was driving in the 5200 block of West Washington Boulevard about 1:46 a.m. when her car struck a utility pole, causing it to flip and roll over, said Los Angeles police Sgt. Barry Montgomery. She died at the scene.

LAPD Capt. Edward Pape told KTLA-TV that the woman's bumper might have been clipped by another vehicle moments before the crash.

Surveillance video footage found near the scene shows two vehicles traveling in the same direction before the woman hit the pole.

Manuel Savinon told KTLA that he was in the area at the time and rushed to help the child, reported to be a 2-year-old girl. "I did what any father would do," he said.

The toddler was taken to an area hospital and is doing "fine," Montgomery said.

Police are investigating the crash and looking for the second vehicle seen in the surveillance video.
