BRIEF: Mortgage rates slide to 3.89 percent

Dec. 04--Average fixed mortgage rates slid this week after less-than-stellar reports on the economy.

The average rate on a 30-year, fixed-rate mortgage was 3.89 percent, down from 3.97 percent last week, and 4.46 percent a year ago, Freddie Mac said in its weekly survey.

The average rate on a 15-year, fixed-rate mortgage was 3.10 percent. That compared with 3.17 percent last week. The rate was 3.47 percent a year ago.

Freddie Mac officials said rates slid across the board after a week of "underwhelming economic releases," including lower-than-expected new-home sales and disappointing payroll growth figures.
