BRIEF: Mortgage rates inch up, stay near 2014 lows

Dec. 24--Mortgage rates inched up this week, but remain near their 2014 lows because of mixed housing and economic news, Freddie Mac said Wednesday.

The average rate of 3.83 percent for a 30-year, fixed-rate mortgage compared with a slightly lower 3.80 percent last week. A year ago, the average interest rate on that loan was 4.48 percent.

For a 15-year, fixed-rate loan, Freddie Mac said, the average interest rate was 3.10 percent, up from last week when it was 3.09 percent. This compares with 3.52 percent a year ago. The news comes amid declines in new- and existing-home sales and a third-quarter GDP that was revised higher, to 5 percent.
