"That's what did it. I shaved."

-- Clayton Kershaw, Dodgers pitcher, jokingly explaining that he shaved his beard to try to change his misfortune. Kershaw won his 100th career game Friday, his first victory since April 17.

"I did it for Mother's Day."

-- Corey Kluber, Cleveland Indians pitcher, explaining that he did not shave his beard to try to change his misfortune. The defending American League Cy Young winner -- 0-5 with a 5.04 earned-run average on Mother's Day -- won his first game this season on Wednesday, giving up one hit and striking out 18 in eight shutout innings.

"It was shaking and I thought it was going to blow up or something. I wanted no part of that."

-- Billy Hamilton, Cincinnati Reds center fielder, on playing in front of an outfield smokestack that caught fire during Friday's game at Cincinnati's Great American Ball Park. Fire crews quickly extinguished the flames, and no injuries were reported.
