BRIEF: Missing boy's body found in San Diego Mission Bay in apparent drowning

Sept. 13--The body of a 4-year-old boy reported missing during a family outing at Mission Bay was found Sunday, an apparent drowning victim.

The disappearance of Wesley Hilaire on Saturday night had initially been reported as a possible abduction, leading to an Amber Alert.

But his body was found 100 yards offshore by rescue personnel using sonar.

"All of us at the San Diego Police Department wanted to find Wesley safe," said Police Chief Shelley Zimmerman. "Our heartfelt condolences and prayers to the family. Thank you to everyone who helped search."

The boy had been with family members at Fiesta Island on the edge of the bay when he was last seen around 7 p.m. Saturday. He disappeared as family members were preparing to leave for home.

His father, a Navy sailor, deployed last week aboard the carrier George Washington.
