July 29--An international flight from Hong Kong to Los Angeles was diverted to the Aleutian Islands in Alaska early Wednesday after the crew declared a mid-air emergency.

The aircraft's diversion was a precaution "due to smoke detected in the aircraft," the airline said in a statement.

The flight carried 276 passengers and 18 crew members, the airline said.

The jetliner landed without incident, according to the FAA.

No further details were immediately available.
