May 14--A Metra train struck and killed a pedestrian Friday evening in northwest suburban Palatine, officials said.

The Chicago-bound train on the Union Pacific Northwest Line hit the person near Hicks Road around 9:30 p.m., Metra spokesman Michael Gillis said.

The pedestrian, who was only described as male, died as a result of the incident, according to Palatine Police Department officials.

Metra trains in both directions in the area were temporarily halted.

As of 11 p.m., outbound trains resumed service, Gillis said.
