BRIEF: Metra engine derails, major delays expected on 3 lines

March 10--A Metra locomotive derailed on the Northwest Side and was expected to clog train traffic north and northwest from Chicago during the evening commute, officials said.

No injuries were reported in the derailment, which involved a single locomotive, Metra spokesman Meg Reilly said. It happened about 3:10 p.m. at a switching point near 1800 North Lawndale Avenue.

Major delays were expected on the Milwaukee West Line to Elgin, the North Central Line to Antioch and the Milwaukee North Line to Fox Lake, Reilly said. Riders on the Milwaukee North Line were urged to find alternate transportation.

The CTA will honor Metra tickets for riders who take the Blue or Brown lines instead of their normal trains, Reilly said.

Metra had recently completed an upgrade of the switches "at the junction between the Milwaukee North and West lines," according to the agency's website.
