BRIEF: Men with knife attack 16-year-old girl in Whittier, authorities say

Oct. 30--Authorities said they were looking for a group of men involved in a knife attack on a teenage girl as she walked to school in Whittier early Thursday.

The 16-year-old girl was walking near Colima and Leffingwell roads about 7 a.m. when she said three men approached her, said something and pulled a knife, said Los Angeles County sheriff's Sgt. Jose Navares.

Scared, the girl ran off as one of the men slashed at her with a knife, Navares said. The girl escaped unharmed.

The girl was being interviewed near where the alleged attack occurred and was very upset, Navares said, "so the information is coming out very slow."

The incident was initially reported as an attempted kidnapping, but authorities are now treating it as an assault with a deadly weapon. The attackers did not try to take anything and it's not clear what their motivation was, Navares said.

A detailed description of the men was not immediately available.
