BRIEF: Melrose Park shooting leaves man dead, boy critical

Dec. 30--A suspect was in custody Tuesday after a 21-year-old man was fatally shot and a 14-year-old boy critically wounded in Melrose Park, police said.

Witnesses told police a gunman began firing into a vehicle, hitting the man and boy, about 12:30 a.m. Tuesday in the 1100 block of 24th Avenue, according to authorities.

The man was identified by the Cook County medical examiner's office as Francisco Diaz, whose address was listed on the same block where the shooting occurred.

Diaz was pronounced dead at 1:05 a.m. at Gottlieb Memorial Hospital in Melrose Park and the boy was taken in critical condition to an area hospital, police said.

A person, whom police called a suspect, was arrested.
