BRIEF: Matt's Cookies acquired by Chicago investment firm

May 06--How sweet it is: Wheeling-based Matt's Cookies has been picked up by Chicago investment firm City Capital Ventures.

Terms of the acquisition, including the price, were not disclosed.

Matt's Cookies, whose official name is Cookie Specialties Inc., will be renamed Matt's Cookie Co. as part of the deal, announced Thursday. Matt's, owned by Blake and Matt Pierce, sells soft-baked cookies and fig bars. The company was founded in 1972.

City Capital's founder and managing partner, Dan Kipp will join Matt's board of directors. The Pierce family will continue to be involved in day-to-day operations, City Capital said.

Matt's offers cookies in six different varieties and fig bars in assorted varieties and flavors under the "Zion" label. The company sells its cookies in over 1,000 grocery and retail outlets.
