5 wounded, including county correctional officer, in city shootings

Aug. 04--At least five people have been wounded in shootings on the city's South and West sides since Monday afternoon, police said.

An off-duty Cook County correctional officer was shot about 10:25 p.m. Monday in the Little Village neighborhood on the Southwest Side, according to police. He was in an alley near the 2800 block of South Tripp Avenue when someone shot him in the leg. He was taken to Stroger Hospital, where his condition was stabilized.

A 35-year-old man suffered a graze wound to the back early Tuesday morning in the West Garfield Park neighborhood on the West Side, police said.

He was in the 4100 block of West Maypole Avenue just before 2 a.m. when he was hurt, police spokesman Officer Ron Gaines said. Gaines said the man was in good condition but had no further information about the circumstances of the shooting or whether he went to a hospital.

At 12:40 a.m. Tuesday in the South Austin neighborhood on the West Side, a 37-year-old man was walking in the 400 block of North Leclaire Avenue when a dark SUV pulled up and someone in the rear passenger seat fired shots, Gaines said.

He was hit in the arm and the calf and drove himself to Loretto Hospital, according to Gaines. He later was transferred to Stroger Hospital, where his condition was stabilized.

A 21-year-old man walked in to Roseland Community Hospital with a gunshot wound to the back early Tuesday, police spokeswoman Officer Amina Greer said. He told police he was shot just after midnight in the 11000 block of South Vernon Avenue in the Roseland neighborhood on the Far South Side.

His condition had stabilized, Greer said. She did not have further information about the circumstances of the shooting.

A 20-year-old man was wounded Monday afternoon in a shooting on the Far South Side in the city's West Pullman neighborhood, Chicago police said.

The shooting happened about 4:15 p.m. in the 12200 block of South Normal Avenue. Preliminary reports said the victim was approached by a known person who began firing in his direction, said Officer Nicole Trainor, a police spokeswoman.

The man was shot in the right leg and suffered a graze wound to his left eye. He was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, and his condition was stabilized, Trainor said.

No one was in custody, and police were investigating.
