2 dead, 9 wounded in shootings since Friday afternoon

Nov. 07--Two men in their 50s were killed in the West Humboldt Park neighborhood on the West Side, and at least nine other people have been wounded in shootings citywide since Friday afternoon, police said.

The most recent fatal shooting occurred at 2:50 a.m. Saturday in West Humboldt Park, said Chicago police spokesman Officer Hector Alfaro.

A 56-year-old man was found on the sidewalk in the 1100 block of North Pulaski Road with a gunshot wound to the chest, Alfaro said. He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Police found shell casings on the ground outside DJ's Gyros, a late-night joint with bulletproof glass in front of the counter. An officer walked out of the restaurant holding a bag of french fries, crossed Division Street and handed it to a woman with her hair in a scarf.

She hadn't seen anything, she said, but she and the others inside DJ's heard the gunshots.

"I was in the restaurant ordering these fries," she said, holding out the greasy bag. Everyone inside agreed that they had heard fireworks, because they sounded low, and nobody out on the sidewalk seemed panicked.

"They didn't run at all," she said. "Just waited a minute and walked away."

By the time she got her fries, the intersection was nearly empty.

About 8 p.m. Friday, a 51-year-old man was killed and two other men were critically wounded in a shooting about five blocks away, police said.

The men were shot just before 8 p.m. in the 1400 block of North Kildare Avenue, said Officer Nicole Trainor, a Chicago police spokeswoman. The 51-year-old man was hit in the abdomen and was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The Cook County medical examiner's office identified him as Felix McGhee, who lived on the same block where he was shot.

A 19-year-old was shot in the abdomen, arm and buttocks and was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, and a 27-year-old was shot in the leg and arm and was taken to Stroger, she said. Both were listed in critical condition.

Neighbors watched police work the taped-off scene of the shooting.

"Let me get my ass in the house," said one middle-aged man who declined to be named.

"I was playing Xbox, and I hit the floor," said the man as his neighbor estimated about 10 rounds were fired.

A woman with him who also declined to give her name said she had lived here for years and that she thought the shooters came from outside the neighborhood.

"This is a quiet block," she said. "It used to be."

"Now all of a sudden it turned around and I'm ready to get out," she said.

Two of the victims lived a few houses down and didn't bother anybody, she says.

"He sells loose cigarettes," the man said of one of the victims.
