Deadly police shootout caps violent day in Chicago

March 15--A deadly police shootout on the West Side Monday night capped a violent 17 hours in Chicago that saw 12 people shot, including three officers wounded in an exchange of gunfire with a suspect who was killed, authorities said.

The shootout occurred around 9:45 p.m. during a chase through a dimly lit courtyard in the 3700 block of West Polk Street in Homan Square, police said. The officers, veterans with about 10 to 12 years on the police force, were expected to survive. The suspect was dead on the scene.

Other shootings Monday and early Tuesday:

--A man was shot in the arm as he stood in the 3000 block of South Komensky Avenue in the Little Village neighborhood about 2:25 a.m. Tuesday, police said. He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital.

--About 10 p.m. Monday, a 55-year-old man crossing the street in the 1200 block of West 74th Street was shot in the back. He was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where his condition was stabilized.

--A 16-year-old boy was shot in the foot in the 3300 block of South Hoyne Avenue in the McKinley Park neighborhood about 5:55 p.m., said Officer Kevin Quaid, a Chicago police spokesman. The boy was in an alley when a gray four-door vehicle drove up and someone fired shots. He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where his condition was stabilized.

--About 4:20 p.m. in the 4700 block of South Federal Street in Robert Taylor Park, a 19-year-old man was shot in the left foot and grazed in his left shin, Quaid said. The man went to the University of Chicago Medical Center. He originally told police he was shot in the 4900 block of South Wabash Avenue. Later, he told police he was shot while playing basketball at the location on Federal. It was believed the man's injuries may have been accidentally self-inflicted.

--A 19-year-old man was shot around 3:55 p.m. in the 800 block of South California Avenue in the Lawndale neighborhood on the West Side, Quaid said. According to police reports, he was driving on California when he felt pain and realized he was shot, Quaid said. The victim drove to Mount Sinai Hospital with a gunshot wound to the right shoulder blade. His condition was stabilized, police said.

--About 3:25 p.m., a person was shot in the 8300 block of South Winchester Avenue in the Gresham neighborhood, Quaid said. According to preliminary reports, a male suffered wounds to the buttocks, Quaid said. There was no information available on where he was taken for treatment.

--About 1:15 p.m., a 27-year-old man was shot in the 6600 block of South Damen Avenue in the West Englewood neighborhood, Quaid said. According to preliminary reports, the victim was involved in a fight with four people and was shot in the left arm, Quaid said. The man drove to Holy Cross Hospital and was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where his condition was stabilized.

--Earlier Monday, a 37-year-old man was shot in the Washington Heights neighborhood. The shooting happened about 9:30 a.m. in the 1000 block of West 99th Street, said Officer Bari Lemmon, a police spokeswoman. The man suffered a graze wound to the head and was taken to Christ Medical Center, where his condition was stabilized, Lemmon said.
