1 dead, 4 wounded in separate shootings

Oct. 01--A man was killed and four other people have been wounded by gunfire since Wednesday morning, police said.

The fatal shooting occurred at 2:36 p.m. in the Humboldt Park neighborhood, said Officer Thomas Sweeney, a Chicago police spokesman.

A 41-year-old man was shot in the chest in the 1500 block of North Harding Avenue and taken to Mount Sinai Hospital where he was later pronounced dead, said Sweeney.

The most recent nonfatal shooting was about 9:20 p.m., when a 47-year-old man was wounded in the Fuller Park neighborhood, said Officer Hector Alfaro, a police spokesman.

He was standing on the sidewalk in the 300 block of West Swann Street when two male attackers walked up, asked about his gang affiliation, and shot him, Alfaro said.

The man was struck in the groin and taken to Stroger Hospital, where he is listed in serious condition, Alfaro said.

At 8:10 p.m. an 18-year-old man and a 15-year-old boy were wounded in the North Austin neighborhood, Sweeney said.

They were in the 5000 block of West Division Street when they were both shot in the arm. The 18-year-old was taken to Stroger Hospital, where his condition had stabilized. The boy was taken to West Suburban Medical Center in Oak Park in good condition, said Sweeney.

Crystal Williams returned from church after the shooting to find bullet holes in her home from a stray shot.

"A bullet through the window, a bullet through the TV and a bullet through the wall ... one bullet," said Williams, 54. "Somebody didn't know what they were doing."

The area has gotten particularly bad in the past few weeks, and Williams plans to move. She will be staying with her daughter for a while, she said.

"They're shooting at the boys who stand on our corner," she said. "I don't know what's going on. They've got a beef going on. I don't know what's going on. I don't hang out outside. I just live there."

At 8:40 a.m., a 25-year-old man was wounded in West Pullman, said Officer Jose Estrada, a police spokesman, citing preliminary information.

He was in the 11700 block of South Harvard Avenue when he was shot in the back and arm, Estrada said. He was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn and his condition was stabilized.
