3 dead, 7 wounded in separate shootings

Feb. 14--Three people were killed and seven men have been wounded in separate shootings since Friday evening on the city's South, Southwest and West sides, police said.

Most recently, a 27-year-old woman was shot to death at a party around 5:25 a.m. Saturday in the South Austin neighborhood on the West Side, said the Cook County medical examiner's office and Officer Janel Sedevic, a Chicago police spokeswoman.

Police said an argument between two men started at a party inside an apartment in the 300 block of South Cicero Avenue. The woman stepped between the two in an attempt to break up the fight, and she was shot in the head, Sedevic said.

The woman was identified as Latania Anderson of the 4700 block of West Maypole Avenue, according to the medical examiner's office. She was pronounced dead at 5:40 a.m. Police intially reported the woman's age was 25.

No one was in custody as of early Saturday, and no other information about the shooting was immediately available.

About 3:50 a.m., a 24-year-old man was shot to death in the Back of the Yards neighborhood on the South Side, Sedevic said.

The man, identified as Lorenzo Garcia of the 4800 block of South Laflin Street, was discovered with a gunshot wound to the head outside in the 4700 block of South Laflin Street after police officers got a call of shots fired in the area, according to police and the medical examiner's office.

He was taken to St. Bernard Hospital and Health Care Center, where he was pronounced dead at 4:16 a.m., according to the medical examiner's office.

No other information about the shooting was immediately available.

About 2:07 a.m., three men, ages 22, 23 and 25, were critically wounded in a shooting in the West Lawn neighborhood on the Southwest Side, Gaines said.

The men suffered various gunshot wounds in the 6800 block of South Lawndale Avenue. Witnesses told police that people inside two vehicles were shooting at each other in the area.

The three men showed up at Holy Cross Hospital and were later transferred to Mount Sinai Hospital, where the 23-year-old eventually died, police said.

The 23-year-old, identified as Vicente Avila of the 5400 block of South Moody Avenue, was pronounced dead at 5:30 a.m., according to the medical examiner's office.

As of 9 a.m. Saturday, the 25-year-old, who had suffered a wound to the neck, was listed in serious condition. The 22-year-old was shot in the wrist and shoulder, and he was in good condition at the hospital.

Police believe the attack was gang-related.

In other shootings:

--A 24-year-old man was wounded about 2:10 a.m. Saturday in the South Austin neighborhood on the West Side, said Officer Ron Gaines, a Chicago police spokesman.

The man was sitting in his vehicle in the 500 block of South Lavergne Avenue when someone in a tan-colored Chevrolet Impala pulled up and fired shots, Gaines said.

The man was shot in the knee and was taken to Loretto Hospital. He was listed in good condition, Gaines said.

--About 1:03 a.m., a 26-year-old man was shot in the foot in the 1200 block of West Lunt Avenue in the Rogers Park neighborhood on the North Side, said Officer Janel Sedevic, a Chicago police spokeswoman. He was taken to an area hospital in Evanston.

--About 11:17 p.m. Friday, a 26-year-old man and a 21-year-old man were shot in the Bridgeport neighborhood on the South Side, said Officer Veejay Zala, a Chicago police spokesman.

The two men were in a vehicle traveling west in the 1000 block of West 32nd Street when someone in a vehicle trailing them fired gunshots, Zala said.

The 21-year-old was shot in the buttocks and managed to get himself to Mercy Hospital and Medical Center. He was transferred to Stroger Hospital, where his condition was stabilized, Zala said.

The 26-year-old suffered a graze wound to his armpit. He refused medical attention at the scene, Zala said.

--Shortly after 5 p.m., a 32-year-old man was wounded in a shooting on the South Side in the city's Marquette Park neighborhood.

According to preliminary information, the man was involved in an argument in the 3100 block of West 64th Street, said Officer Thomas Sweeney, a Chicago police spokesman.

During the argument, someone pulled out a gun and shot the man in the buttocks. He was taken in good condition to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn.

Police were investigating.
