BRIEF: Man, woman get themselves to safety after falling into Lake Michigan

Nov. 28--A man and woman who apparently fell into Lake Michigan near North Avenue Beach early Saturday both got themselves to safety, Chicago Fire Department officials said.

About 3 a.m., fire officials responded to the beach, 1600 N. Lake Shore Drive, and found that the man had gotten himself out of the water. He said he couldn't find the woman he was with, and authorities launched a search.

About 4:10 a.m., police officials notified the Fire Department that the missing woman had been found at a nearby residence on Lake Shore Drive. She was already out of the water by the time the Fire Department arrived, according to a Fire Department spokesman.

The man, whose age was not available, was taken to an area hospital as a precautionary measure.

Fire Department officials warned people to stay away from the lakefront when the wind is high, because "rogue waves" make for dangerous conditions.
