BRIEF: Man who brandished a gun shot by police in Hollywood, LAPD says

May 24--A man who pointed a handgun at a group of people in Hollywood was shot and wounded by Los Angeles police officers early Sunday, a police spokeswoman said.

Officers were near Hollywood Boulevard and Cherokee Avenue about 2:10 a.m. when they saw the man arguing with three other men, said LAPD Det. Meghan Aguilar.

The man "walked to the back of a white SUV and reached inside. When he took his hand from the vehicle, the officers saw he was holding a handgun," she said.

The man pointed the gun at the group he had been arguing with, Aguilar said. One of the two officers who saw the confrontation shot the man in the upper torso, she said. Aguilar said she did not know how many shots were fired.

The three men who had been arguing with the gunman fled after the shooting, she said. A handgun was recovered from the scene, Aguilar said.

The LAPD identified the alleged gunman as Tegan James Stephens, 33, of Las Vegas. He was booked on a charge of exhibiting a firearm in the presence of a police officer.

Stephens underwent surgery Sunday morning, Aguilar said.
