BRIEF: Man tried to lure girl in Evanston

May 01--Evanston police are asking for help in finding a man who tried to lure a 12-year-old girl into his car Saturday afternoon.

The 12-year-old was walking in the 200 block of Main Street in north suburban Evanston around 1:40 p.m. when a man in a white SUV pulled up to her, according to a news release from Evanston Police Department.

The man asked the girl about the location of a coffee shop in the area. He then asked the girl to show him where the shop was located. He then came out of the vehicle, opened up the passenger door of his car, asking her to get inside, according to the release.

The girl refused to go inside the car and backed away. The man got back into the SUV and was last seen eastbound on Main Street.

The suspect is a Hispanic man between 20 and 30 years old. He is shot in statute and has a goatee. His car was a newer white sports utility vehicle, possibly a Chevrolet Traverse. The man identified himself as Jose to the girl.

Anyone with information about the suspect should contact Evanston police at 847-866-5000.
