BRIEF: Man suffers third-degree burn after cars found on fire in downtown L.A.

Feb. 19--Arson investigators are looking into the cause of a fire Friday that swept through several vehicles and left a man with third-degree burns to his body.

The fire was reported about 6:23 a.m. in the 1000 block of West Washington Boulevard in the University Park neighborhood under the 110 Freeway, said Erik Scott, a spokesman of the Los Angeles Fire Department. Photographs from the blaze showed flames and a black cloud of smoke over the 110 Freeway in downtown Los Angeles.

Firefighters arrived to discover several vehicles on fire near a homeless encampment.

The flames were quickly extinguished, but a 35-year-old man suffered severe burns to part of his right leg.

The man was in serious condition and taken to an area hospital, Scott said.

It was not immediately clear how the fire started, but arson investigators were examining the area.
