Dec. 06--A man who walked into a Lake County elementary school to apply for a job instead decided to steal from a teacher's purse, authorities said Saturday.
Lavonte M. Murel, 20, has been charged with burglary to a school, identity theft and unlawful use of a credit card, all felonies, in connection with the incident.
Murel entered Woodland Elementary School in Gages Lake on Nov. 30 and took debit and credit cards from a teacher's purse, according to a news release from the Lake County Sheriff's Office. The teacher later reported that more than $1,200 had been spent on those cards without her authorization.
Murel was caught on security camera walking into and coming out of the classroom, and was arrested at his home in Zion on Saturday. He admitted to detectives that he went to the school to apply for a job, but instead decided to walk around looking for something to steal, according to the release.
Murel is expected to appear in court Sunday.
