1 dead, 4 wounded in Thursday shootings

Nov. 13--A 33-year-old man was shot to death in the West Garfield Park neighborhood Thursday morning, while four other people, including a 15-year-old boy, were shot and wounded within 45 minutes in other parts of the city Thursday evening, according to authorities.

The man shot to death was in the 4400 block of West Monroe Street when someone shot him at least twice about 10:35 a.m. He was later identified as Lee M. Fields, who lived on the same block where he was shot, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.

Fields was pronounced dead at 11:10 a.m. at Mount Sinai Hospital, according to authorities.

The victim heard shots and saw five to six men or boys running west in the 4300 block of West Monroe, police said. He ran into a nearby building and collapsed in a hallway before someone came to his aid.

Thursday evening, a man was critically wounded on the Northwest Side and three people were shot within less than 10 minutes on the Northwest and South sides, including a 15-year-old boy who was critically injured in the Belmont Central neighborhood.

In the Belmont Gardens neighborhood, a 46-year-old man was shot and critically wounded while standing talking to a friend outside a corner store about 6:55 p.m., police said.

The man was standing outside the store in the 4400 block of West Diversey Avenue when an attacker crouched down between two cars and began firing shots, hitting the man, said Officer Nicole Trainor, a Chicago police spokeswoman. The attacker then ran east in the south alley of Diversey.

The man was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where he was in critical condition with gunshot wounds to the leg and buttocks, she said.

The 15-year-old boy was in the 2400 block of North Austin Avenue at 6:32 p.m. when he was shot in the chest, Trainor said. He was taken to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood in critical condition, she said.

Minutes earlier in the South Shore neighborhood, a 17-year-old boy suffered a gunshot wound near 71st Street and Ridgeland Avenue, Trainor said. The boy was in good condition at Jackson Park Hospital after suffering a gunshot wound to the right hand.

The boy was on a bicycle when someone came up and fired shots at him, then fled, Trainor said.

A 35-year-old man was shot in the West Pullman neighborhood about 6:20 p.m., Trainor said. He was in the 400 block of West 118th Street when he was shot in the right leg. He was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, and his condition was stabilized. The shooting may have been narcotics-related, Trainor said.
