Aug. 28--Police shot and killed a man in Van Nuys late Thursday after he allegedly attacked officers who had been called to a dispute among neighbors, according to LAPD officials.
LAPD Sgt. Barry Montgomery told TV news outlets at the scene that a man involved in the dispute turned on officers, "armed himself with an unknown hard object and began striking one of the officers in the head and shoulder areas."
Police then shot the man, who was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Officer Nuria Vanegas. A caller had reported the disagreement in the 14600 block of Valerio Street to police about 11:40 p.m.
Montgomery said the injured officer was taken to a hospital with moderate injuries.
It was not immediately known if a police dashboard camera recorded the confrontation, Vanegas said. LAPD officers are not yet outfitted with body cameras that could have recorded the incident, she said.
LAPD officers have shot and killed 13 people in 2015, according to coroner's records collected in The Times' Homicide Report.
