BRIEF: Man shot in March dies of his injuries

April 07--A 27-year-old man who was shot last month has died of his injuries, officials said.

Quentin A. Thompson, of the 9200 block of South Kimbark Avenue, was pronounced dead at 11:25 a.m. Friday at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.

According to an autopsy conducted Monday, Thompson died after being shot in the back, and his death was ruled a homicide, according to the office.

He was shot March 31 on the 8800 block of South Cottage Grove Avenue in the city's Chatham neighborhood, police said.

Police initially said officers responded to the scene about 9:15 a.m. and found the man with a gunshot wound to the head. Police also initially said the man was 26.

The man was making a hand-to-hand transaction when one of the attackers displayed a handgun and announced a robbery, police said, citing a preliminary investigation.

A struggle occurred, during which the man was shot. The attackers then fled the scene, police said.

The man was taken to Northwestern, where he was initially in "grave" condition, police said.

Police discovered one 40 mm shell casing at the crime scene.
