Man shot to death in Wicker Park, 6 others wounded across Chicago

March 10--A man was shot dead in the Wicker Park neighborhood and six other people were wounded in shootings in Chicago Wednesday through early Thursday, according to police.

The fatal shooting occurred around 6:35 p.m. in the 1200 block of North Milwaukee Avenue. Cesar Perez, 19, was shot in the head and pronounced dead at Stroger Hospital, according to Officer Michelle Tannehill, a Chicago police spokeswoman.

Perez lived in the 1400 block of West Division Street, about two blocks from the shooting.

Other shootings:

--A 22-year-old man was wounded about 12:25 a.m. Thursday in the Austin neighborhood on the West Side, said Officer Hector Alfaro, a police spokesman.

The man was walking on a sidewalk in the 5100 block of West Chicago Avenue when he heard gunshots, Alfaro said. He was hit in the right leg and he was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where his condition was stabilized, he said.

--About 9:50 p.m. Wednesday, a 17-year-old boy was wounded in the Chatham neighborhood on the South Side, Alfaro said.

The teen was in an alley in the 7900 block of South Cottage Grove Avenue when several people walked up and shots were fired, Alfaro said.

The boy was hit in the right arm and back. He walked into Advocate Trinity Hospital and was transferred to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where his condition was stabilized, Alfaro said.

--About 9:25 p.m., a 22-year-old man was seriously wounded in the Ida B. Wells / Darrow Homes neighborhood on the South Side, said Officer Veejay Zala, a Chicago police spokesman.

The man was standing on the rear porch of a home in the 600 block of East 37th Street when he heard gunshots, Zala said. He was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he was listed in serious condition, Zala said.

--A 49-year-old man was shot during a robbery inside a restaurant in the 4000 block of West Madison Street about 6 p.m. He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital with a leg wound and was in good condition, police said. He was sitting inside the restaurant when someone shot him while robbing him, police said.

--A 66-year-old man was wounded while standing with a younger man someone may have been firing toward, police said. He was shot about 7:05 p.m. in the 9200 block of South Ada Street and taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in stable condition. He suffered an arm and a leg wound, police said. He was standing next to a 23-year-old outside when someone on foot approached and started shooting, police said.

--A 22-year-old man was shot in the Englewood neighborhood Wednesday morning, according to police. The shooting happened about 9:55 a.m. in the 5800 block of South Aberdeen Street, police said. He was driving north when someone in a silver car pulled alongside and opened fire, wounding the 22-year-old, who then crashed.

The car fled west on 58th Street, police said. The man was shot in the abdomen, and police said he was taken to Stroger Hospital in serious-to-critical condition, police said. The victim's silver SUV jumped a curb, crashed into a barrier and came to rest near 58th and Aberdeen.

--A 21-year-old man who was shot in a robbery Feb. 21 sought treatment Wednesday evening for a wound to the left knee, Tannehill said. The man went to Rush University Medical Center after realizing that what he thought was a graze wound was more serious, according to police.

He told investigators he was shot about 9 p.m. Feb. 21 in the 5500 block of South Albany Avenue.
