8 wounded in city shootings

April 14--Police taped off a section of 82nd Street between Muskegon and Escanaba avenues late Monday night as they investigated the third shooting in the South Chicago neighborhood in three hours.

The three people shot there -- part of an ongoing conflict police attribute to an internal dispute among sets of the same gang -- were among eight people shot Monday afternoon and night on the South and West sides.

The three South Chicago shootings happened between 9 p.m. and midnight Monday. In the latest incident, a 27-year-old man was wounded about 11:50 p.m., police said. The man was in the 8200 block of South Muskegon when he was shot in the back, police said.

The man was exiting a vehicle when a male gunman walked up to him and fired shots, said Chicago Police Department News Affairs Officer Hector Alfaro. He was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where his condition stabilized, Alfaro said.

At the scene, police taped off a section of 82nd Street between Muskegon and Escanaba. Police officers used flashlights to examine shell casings and other evidence at the scene.

Around 9:40 p.m. Monday, a 22-year-old man was dropped off at South Shore Hospital after he had been shot less than a mile away from the Muskegon scene in South Chicago, Alfaro said.

The man was in the 8100 block of South Phillips Avenue when he heard gunshots and realized he had been struck, Alfaro said. He suffered a gunshot wound to the right ankle, and his condition stabilized at the hospital, Alfaro said.

About half an hour earlier, an 18-year-old man was wounded in a shooting, also in South Chicago, Alfaro said. The man was in the 8700 block of South Saginaw Avenue when he was shot in the leg, Alfaro said, citing preliminary information.

He was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where his condition stabilized.

Several hours later, police found that a 15-year-old boy was also at the scene of the same shooting. He was not shot but suffered injuries to his back and was taken to South Shore Hospital for treatment, police said.

Elsewhere in the city, about 10:25 p.m. Monday, a 28-year-old man walked into St. Bernard Hospital and Health Care Center after being shot in the Englewood neighborhood on the South Side, Alfaro said.

The man was in a vehicle, stopped at a light, in the 7000 block of South Vincennes Avenue when a silver four-door sedan pulled up next to him and a passenger fired shots, Alfaro said. The man was shot in the shoulder and drove himself to the hospital, Alfaro said. His condition stabilized. No one is in custody in connection with the shooting.

Shortly before 8 p.m. Monday, a 16-year-old boy was shot in the 7300 block of South Blackstone Avenue in the Grand Crossing neighborhood, police said. The teen was shot in the back and taken in serious condition to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, according to police.

At 7:05 p.m. Monday, a woman, 26, was shot in the 7900 block of South Maryland Avenue, police said. The woman, who was in the East Chatham neighborhood, had a gunshot wound to her leg and was taken to Stroger Hospital in serious condition, police said.

At 7 p.m. Monday, a 23-year-old man walked into West Suburban Hospital in Oak Park with a gunshot wound to the leg. The man, who was in good condition, said he was shot in the 5300 block of West Ohio Street in the Austin neighborhood.

Earlier, a 23-year-old man was shot in the arm in the Englewood neighborhood, police said. The shooting happened about 3:50 p.m. near 70th and Elizabeth streets. Police said the shooting may have been a drive-by, but it remains under investigation. The victim was taken to St. Bernard, where his condition had stabilized, authorities said.
