BRIEF: Man shot by police charged with assault

June 26--A 23-year-old man shot by police was charged with aggravated assault of a peace officer with a weapon and felony unlawful use of a weapon, according to authorities.

Chicago police shot Alfontish Cockerham on Saturday night in the 7000 block of South Merrill Avenue in the city's South Shore neighborhood.

An officer chasing Cockerham told him to drop a gun and he instead turned toward officers and raised it, according to a statement given by police at the scene.

Cockerham, of the 11800 block of South Harvard Avenue, was due in court Wednesday afternoon, according to the Chicago Police Department.

Cockerham never appeared in bond court because he was hospitalized, according to the Cook County State's Attorney's Office. A judge set his bail at $100,000.
