BRIEF: Man shoots self in hand while struggling with burglar in home on SW Side

April 29--A 69-year-old man accidentally shot himself in the hand after he struggled with a male who had broken into his West Eldson home Thursday afternoon, Chicago police said.

The man was in his home on the 3600 block of West 57th Place on the Southwest Side when he heard someone inside, said Officer Thomas Sweeney, a police spokesman.

After he retrieved the gun he confronted the burglar and the two struggled, said Sweeney. During the course of the struggle the homeowners gun went off and the man was shot in the hand.

The male fled the home and the resident was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in good condition, police said.

Central area detectives were investigating and searching for the burglar.

The home owner had a valid gun permit and is not facing charges.
