1 dead, 6 wounded in shootings in Chicago, including possible road rage incident on Bishop Ford

Sept. 24--A semi driver was wounded in the leg while driving on the Bishop Ford Expressway in a possible road rage shooting, one of seven people shot across Chicago overnight since Wednesday.

Someone in a black SUV opened fire on the truck driver near near Beaubien Woods around 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, according to Illinois State Police.

He was shot in the thigh and taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn. His injury was not considered life-threatening, state police said.

The northbound lanes were closed while police investigated. No other details were available.

Around 11:10 p.m., a man was shot and killed in the Burnside neighborhood on the South Side.

The 48-year-old man was on the sidewalk in the 9200 block of South University Avenue when someone walked up and shot him in the chest, back, leg and face, according to Officer Hector Alfaro, a Chicago police spokesman. He was taken to Advocate Christ and pronounced dead.

Early Thursday, police cordoned off a block of University Avenue between 92nd and 93rd streets. Officers and detectives examined a silver car at the crime scene.

A woman walked up and lingered for a few moments, crying.

"He was the delivery guy," she said. "He would take me to and from work."

The woman closed her eyes, covered her face with her hand and started sobbing. "It's too much," she cried. "It's just too much."

In the hour or so after the shooting, police fielded reports of gunfire in the surrounding blocks. When a loud crack rang out north of the crime scene, a detective's head snapped up.

He paused.

"Just fireworks," he said and headed underneath the tape.
