Man killed, missing 1-year-old granddaughter found safe

Feb. 10--Police and firefighters responding to a fire in West Town found a 60-year-old man shot to death and his 1-year-old granddaughter missing, authorities said.

The girl was found hours later at a relative's home, but police were still investigating who killed Robert L. Smith and why.

Emergency crews were alerted after Smith wife's asked a relative to check on him because he wasn't answering the phone, police said.

The relative went to the home in the 100 block of North Wood Street around 9 p.m. Monday and saw that Smith's car was there. She called 911 because the smoke detector was going off and no one was answering the door, police said.

Firefighters forced their way in and found Smith facedown in the hallway with food burning on the stove, according to police. They turned his body over and found that he had been shot and stabbed, police said.

The child was found safe at a relative's but was taken to a hospital for observation, police said.

Police said the homicide appeared to be "domestic-related" but did not elaborate.

An autopsy conducted Tuesday determined that Smith died of multiple gunshot wounds and his death was a homicide, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.
