BRIEF: Man killed in Long Beach officer-involved shooting is identified

Nov. 23--Los Angeles County coroner officials on Saturday identified a young man who was fatally shot by a Long Beach police officer.

The victim, who died Friday in a home in the South Wrigley area, was identified as 18-year-old Carey Smith-Viramontes of Long Beach.

An officer went to the home in the 2300 block of Eucalyptus Avenue in response to a report of a missing young girl, according to a statement from the Long Beach Police Department.

The officer learned the girl was inside the house with a young man with whom she once had a relationship.

Police said there was a restraining order against Smith-Viramontes because of previous domestic violence allegations.

"The male adult armed himself with a knife," the police statement read. "Fearing for the safety of the parties, the officer discharged his weapon, striking the suspect."

Smith-Viramontes was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

The Los Angeles County district attorney and the Long Beach police are investigating the shooting.

Anyone with information may call Long Beach Dets. Todd Johnson and Shea Robertson at (562) 570-7244.
