Oct. 13--A 68-year-old man was struck and killed in a hit-and-run crash late Monday evening near northwest suburban Buffalo Grove, authorities said.
Officials discovered James Spicak, of the 16000 block of West Pope Boulevard, lying unresponsive in a ditch around 11 p.m. near Pope Boulevard and Eugene Avenue in unincorporated Prairie View, according to a release from the Lake County sheriff's office.
According to a preliminary investigation, an unknown vehicle was traveling west on West Pope Boulevard when it struck several mailboxes as well as Spicak, who was standing near his mailbox. The driver of the vehicle fled the scene, authorities said.
An ambulance took Spicak to Advocate Condell Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead, according to the release.
The crash remains under investigation. No one was in custody early Tuesday as a result of the incident.
