2 dead, 10 wounded in shootings in Chicago Tuesday through early Wednesday

Feb. 17--Two people were shot to death and at least 10 other people were wounded in shootings from early Tuesday through early Wednesday in Chicago, police said.

Rashawn Gooden Jr., 21, was shot to death around 9:05 a.m. Tuesday in the 4900 block of West Division Street, a block from where he lived, according to police.

Gooden walked out of a store when someone fired several shots and hit him, said Officer Thomas Sweeney, a police spokesman. He was pronounced dead at Mount Sinai Hospital at 9:38 a.m., according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.

The second homicide occurred at 6:50 p.m. Tuesday. A 28-year-old man was in the 1700 block of West Cermak Road in the Heart of Chicago neighborhood when someone walked up and shot him in the side and the chest, police said. He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital and pronounced dead.

Other shootings:

--At 3:10 a.m. Wednesday, a 22-year-old man was shot in the Sauganash neighborhood on the Northwest Side, police said. He was in a car with friends in the 4200 block of West Peterson Avenue when one of the friends pulled out a handgun and fired, hitting him in the arm and hand. He went to St. Francis Hospital in Evanston, where his condition was stabilized.

--About 12:40 a.m. Wednesday, a 31-year-old man was shot in the Heart of Chicago neighborhood. He was in a car in the 2100 block of South Leavitt Street when another vehicle pulled up and someone inside fired shots, police said. He was hit in the chest and taken to Stroger Hospital in serious condition.

Police said they were questioning persons of interest.

--At 9:25 p.m. Tuesday, a 26-year-old man was shot in South Austin, said Officer Hector Alfaro, a police spokesman. He was in the driver's seat of a parked car in the 300 block of South Laramie Avenue when he was shot, Alfaro said. He drove to the 5200 block of West Congress Parkway, where an ambulance responded and took him to Mount Sinai Hospital. His condition was stabilized.

--At 6:50 p.m., a 16-year-old boy was shot in Englewood, Alfaro said. He was in the 1100 block of West 70th Street when someone walked up, shot him in the stomach and then ran. The boy went to Stroger Hospital, and his condition was stabilized.

--About 6:35 p.m. in the Chicago Lawn neighborhood, a 34-year-old man was shot in the abdomen and left hand in a drive-by shooting in the 6200 block of South Troy Street, police said. He was in serious condition at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, Officer Michelle Tannehill, a police spokeswoman, said.

The man was outside when a dark SUV drove up and someone inside fired shots, hitting the man, she said.

--At 6:25 p.m., a 17-year-old boy was shot in the Lithuanian Plaza neighborhood, police said. He was in the 6900 block of South Maplewood Avenue when he was shot in the leg. He went to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, and his condition was stabilized.

--At 4:55 p.m., a 19-year-old man was seriously wounded in the Gage Park neighborhood. He was in the 3400 block of West 51st Street when he was shot in the stomach, Sweeney said. He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in serious condition.

--At 4 p.m. in the Lawndale neighborhood, a 24-year-old man was shot in the 1500 block of South Spaulding Avenue, Sweeney said. The man was walking in the area when, he told police, he heard shots and felt pain in the back. The man was in fair condition at Mount Sinai Hospital.

--At 3:20 p.m., a 24-year-old man was shot in the 2700 block of South Kedvale Avenue in the Little Village neighborhood. He suffered gunshot wounds to the back and arm when a vehicle pulled up and someone fired shots, Sweeney said. The man was taken to Mount Sinai in good condition.

--About 7 a.m., a 62-year-old man was shot in the 500 block of East 33rd Street in the Lake Meadows neighborhood. He was shot in the leg and taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital. His condition was stabilized, police said.

Police News Affairs was releasing no information about the circumstances of the 33rd Street shooting.
