BRIEF: Man injured, 12 displaced in South Side fire

Nov. 13--A man was injured and 12 other people were displaced when a fire broke out in a three-story building on the South Side on Wednesday evening, authorities said.

The blaze started around 10:10 p.m. in a mixed-use building on the corner of East 76th Street and South Cottage Grove Avenue in the Chatham neighborhood, said Chicago Fire Department Cmdr. Frank Velez.

The man, who is about 52 years old, jumped from the second floor of the building and broke his leg, Velez said. He was taken to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County where his condition stabilized, Velez said. Two other people refused medical attention.

At the scene, fire trucks and ambulances crowded the intersection of 76th and Cottage Grove. A group of displaced residents, who occupied apartments on the second and third floors, stood nearby, watching the firefighters.

The blaze was struck around 10:40 p.m., Velez said. The cause is under investigation.
