BRIEF: Man charged in Far South Side auto pound stabbing

March 08--A 38-year-old South Side man has been charged in a Monday stabbing of a security guard at a city auto pound.

Heriance A. Turman, of the 6900 block of South Racine Avenue, was charged with attempted first-degree murder. He turned himself in to authorities about 1:30 p.m. Monday, police said.

The security guard, who also works as a campus police officer for the Indiana University Northwest Police Department in Gary, was on the job at the auto pound on 10301 S. Doty Ave. just after 1 a.m. when he and Turman began fighting, police said.

Police said Turman stabbed and cut the security guard several times in the head and neck, and he was taken in serious condition to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn.

The security guard, 22, has worked on the university police force for about a year, a university spokesman said.

Turman is scheduled to appear Wednesday at a bail hearing.
