BRIEF: Man in critical condition after setting himself on fire in Loop

Aug. 11--A man suffered burns over more than 80 percent of his body after setting himself on fire in the Loop on Monday night, authorities said.

The Chicago Fire Department responded to the 400 block of South Franklin Street about 9 p.m. Monday and found the 24-year-old man on fire, according to police and Chicago Fire Department Cmdr. Frank Velez.

He was taken to Stroger Hospital in critical condition, and his condition had not changed as of Tuesday morning. Velez said the man was burned over more than 80 percent of his body.

Shortly before the incident, a security guard saw the man walking down the street with a container of gasoline, he said.

The incident appears to have been a suicide attempt, police said.
