BRIEF: Man hurt in Southwest Side shooting dies at hospital

June 30--A 21-year-old man died Saturday afternoon at a West Side hospital after being shot earlier that day in the Gage Park neighborhood, officials said Tuesday.

Joseph Rivera, 21, of the 5600 block of South Tripp Avenue, was pronounced dead at 2:20 p.m. Saturday at Mount Sinai Hospital, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.

That raised the total number of people killed over the weekend in Chicago to 5, according to a Chicago Tribune database of Chicago murders. Four of those homicide victims were shot to death; the fifth was a stabbing victim.

Rivera had been critically injured in a shooting about 2:25 a.m. in the 2600 block of West 51st Street on the Southwest Side, police said. At the time, police said he had been driving a silver 2007 Pontiac G6 with three young women as passengers and was stopped at a light in the 2500 block of West 51st Street when a male attacker in a Jeep Wrangler pulled up.

The gunman yelled gang slogans and fired, police said, and Rivera was hit in the back of his head and was taken to Mount Sinai.

The gunman ran back to the SUV and fled the scene going south on Rockwell Street.

No one is in custody for the shooting at this time, police said Tuesday.
