BRIEF: Man hit by train in South Side rail yard, leg severed

Oct. 16--A man who was found with part of his left leg severed is believed to have been in a Back of the Yards rail yard when he was hit by a train Thursday evening, authorities said.

The man was found near 51st Street and Shields Avenue in the Fuller Park neighborhood about 8:05 p.m., after emergency crews responded to a call of a man injured in the area. Police found the man in the 300 block of West 51st Place, said Officer Bari Lemmon, a Chicago police spokeswoman.

The injured man had part of his lower left leg missing, authorities said.

He was taken to Stroger Hospital in serious condition, a Fire Department spokesman said.

A Norfolk Southern rail yard is just to the west of where the man was found, and a railroad spokeswoman said the man was believed to have been injured there.

Norfolk Southern and Chicago police are investigating, said Susan Terpay, a spokeswoman for the railroad. Norfolk Southern police believe the man was hit by a train while trespassing in the rail yard, she said in an email.
