May 20--A man was found dead, possibly stabbed, beaten or both, following a suspicious fire in an Avondale neighborhood two-flat Wednesday morning, authorities said.
The man, believed to be 65, was found on the second floor of the two-story brick building after a fire about 6:15 a.m. in the 3900 block of West School Street, said Chicago Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford.
The man was found under mattress debris in the living room -- the same room where the fire was believed to have started, an official said.
The owner told investigators that he had hired the man to watch the building while it was under construction, the official said.
Detectives were conducting a death investigation, according to a police spokeswoman.
