2 dead, 8 wounded since Sunday afternoon

Aug. 17--Neighbors gathered in tight groups of 10 to 15 people late Sunday in Lawndale, clustering near sidewalks and keeping their distance from the crime scene tape stretched across South Springfield Avenue.

Across the tape, police had found about eight shell casings, some dice and about $9 in cash soaked in blood.

The shooting at about 9:45 p.m. Sunday on the West Side killed a 19-year-old man and critically wounded a 16-year-old boy, police said.

The two were outside in the 1600 block of South Springfield Avenue at about 9:45 p.m. when two people approached and started firing, said Officer Ron Gaines, a Chicago Police Department spokesman.

The 19-year-old was shot multiple times and taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The 16-year-old was shot in the head and taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in critical condition.

The 19-year-old has been identified by the Cook County medical examiner's office as Jerome Phelps, of the 1800 block of South Ridgeway Avenue in Chicago.

Shootings since Sunday afternoon killed two people and wounded at least eight others, police said.

The other fatal shooting occurred shortly after 1 p.m. in the West Englewood neighborhood on the South Side. A 21-year-old man was pronounced dead less than a hour being shot.

The shooting happened shortly after 1 p.m. in the 5700 block of South Paulina Avenue, said Officer Veejay Zala, a Chicago police spokesman.

Citing preliminary information, Zala said the man had a wound to the head. He was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 1:52 p.m., according to the Cook County medical examiner's office. The man has not yet been officially identified.

No one was in custody, and police were investigating.
