Man fatally struck by car on West Side

March 06--A man died after he was hit by a car that swerved into another one on Pulaski Road in Chicago's West Garfield Park neighborhood Thursday afternoon.

The car, driven by a 79-year-old man, was heading north on Pulaski at a fast speed when it swerved just before hitting a man in the street just south of Gladys Avenue about 1:20 p.m., police said.

The car then hit a parked BMW that slid into a black car parked behind it. The black car was pushed north half a block by the impact, police said.

The first car and the BMW came to rest on the sidewalk against a row of small trees bordering a vacant lot.

The pedestrian who was struck by the car was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital where he was pronounced dead just before 2 p.m. He was later identified as Andrew Smith, 41, of the 1900 block of South Saint Louis Avenue, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.

The front-seat passenger of the car suffered a broken leg, and a woman in the back seat was able to walk away from the crash but then lay on the ground until paramedics took her away.

Their ages and the age of the man killed in the crash weren't immediately available.

The driver of the car and one passenger were taken to Stroger Hospital, police said. Another passenger was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital.

Police shut down Pulaski in both directions from Adams Street to Jackson Boulevard, just north of the Eisenhower Expressway.
