BRIEF: Man fatally stabbed on Near North Side identified

Nov. 11--A 29-year-old man who was fatally stabbed over the weekend on the Near North Side has been identified, authorities said.

About 2:20 a.m. Sunday, police officers responded to a call in the 800 block of North Orleans Street and found a man lying unresponsive on the sidewalk, police said.

The man had been stabbed repeatedly in the back, police said. He was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 3:31 a.m.

The man was identified Monday as Willis Jefferson, of the 7400 block of South Vincennes Avenue in Chicago, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.

Officials there ruled Jefferson's death a homicide.

Jefferson had been released on parole in August after he was sentenced in 2007 to eight years in the Illinois Department of Corrections for aggravated battery to a peace officer, department of corrections records show.
