2 killed, 1 wounded in shootings since Sunday

Nov. 10--Two men were killed and at least one other person was critically wounded in separate shootings on the city's Northwest Side since Sunday afternoon.

About 12:15 a.m. Monday, a 26-year-old man was fatally shot in the Galewood neighborhood.

The man was standing with friends in an alleyway in the 2100 block of North Merrimac Avenue when a gunman approached the group on foot, yelled gang slogans and then opened fire, said Chicago Police Department News Affairs Officer Amina Greer.

The 26-year-old was shot in his face and was taken to Loyola University Medical Center in serious condition. He was later pronounced dead there, police said.

Hours earlier, a 44-year-old man suffered a fatal gunshot wound to the head Sunday afternoon on the city's Belmont Cragin neighborhood, police said.

The man was standing in the 2800 block of North Lotus Avenue about 2:20 p.m. when a gunman got out of a vehicle and shot him in the head, said News Affairs Officer Veejay Zala. The gunman fled, and the 44-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene, he said.

He was identified as Luis Zuniga, accoridng to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office. Officials there said he lived on the same block where he was shot.

Most recently, a man was shot in his head near O'Hare International Airport.

About 12:25 a.m. Monday, the 31-year-old man and a friend were delivering a pizza in the 5400 block of North East River Road, police said. When the 31-year-old got out of the car, two people approached him on foot and announced a robbery, Greer said.

One of people had a handgun and opened fire, hitting the 31-year-old in the head. The two then fled without taking anything, police said.

The 31-year-old man was taken in serious condition to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital, Greer said. His friend, who was sitting in the passenger seat of the car at the time of the shooting, was uninjured.

As of early Monday, no one was in custody in connection with any of the shootings, and police were investigating.

Another man was also hospitalized after being stabbed in Englewood early Monday, police said.

About 2:20 a.m. Monday, a 33-year-old man was stabbed in the 6500 block of South Lowe Avenue during a fight, police said.

The man got into a physical fight with his girlfriend's 26-year-old son, and the son stabbed the man in his face and chest. The man was taken to John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital of Cook County, where his condition stabilized, police said.

As of early Monday, the 26-year-old was in police custody but had not been criminally charged.
