March 22--A man was fatally shot Saturday afternoon in the city's Auburn Gresham neighborhood, while two other people were wounded in evening shootings, police said.
Just after 12:30 p.m., officers responded to a call of shots fired in the area of the 8800 block of South Wood Street on the South Side. When officers arrived, they found a man lying on a back porch with a gunshot wound to the chest, said Chicago Police Department spokesman Officer Thomas Sweeney, citing preliminary information.
The victim was identified as Alexander Colon, 30, of the same block where he was shot. Colon was pronounced dead at 12:52 p.m. at the scene, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.
No one was in custody for the shooting and police were investigating.
Later Saturday in the East Side neighborhood, a 23-year-old woman was critically wounded after being shot in the head about 7:10 p.m. while riding in a vehicle near 109th Street and Green Bay Avenue on the Far South Side, Chicago police spokesman Veejay Zala said.
The woman was a passenger in the vehicle when someone fired into the vehicle from behind, hitting her, Zala said, citing preliminary information.
The others in the car initially took the woman to Advocate Trinity Hospital, but she was later taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where she was in critical condition.
Saturday evening, a blue SUV in which the woman was injured and then taken to the hospital sat outside Trinity Hospital, with red police tape wrapped around it. The SUV, its hazard lights still blinking and the back driver-side door open, remained parked outside the emergency room entrance around 9 p.m. Saturday night.
People coming into the building glanced at it quizzically, with one asking police if they could come in. The answer was yes.
Meanwhile, at the scene where the woman was shot, police taped off the end of the block as they investigated the shooting.
Earlier, a 17-year-old boy was shot about 6:20 p.m. in the Galewood neighborhood on the Northwest Side, police said. The boy was shot in the left arm, possibly during a drive-by shooting, police said.
The shooting took place on the 2200 block of North Narragansett Avenue, Zala said. The teen was taken to Loyola University Medical Center, where his condition had stabilized.
