BRIEF: Man dies in fire at Berwyn bungalow, officials say

May 20--A 23-year-old man died in a fire while in the attic at his bungalow home in the 1800 block of Scoville Avenue in Berwyn early Friday, according to fire officials.

Anthony Banda was pronounced dead at 2:04 a.m., according to the Cook County medical examiner's office. The office said an autopsy is scheduled for Friday.

Berwyn Fire Chief Denis O'Halloran said responders arrived at the home at 1:40 a.m. and found heavy flames blowing out of the attic window. He said that Banda was in the attic at the time of the fire.

O'Halloran said fire officials forced open the front door and woke up two other people sleeping on a lower floor. He said they were taken out of the home and were unharmed. No other people were in the home.

Berwyn fire officials were on the scene until just after 6 a.m. The cause of the fire is under investigation, O'Halloran said.
