BRIEF: Man dies after being pulled from silo at Far South Side refinery

June 16--A 56-year-old man died after being pulled from a silo holding toxic material Monday afternoon at a chemical plant and refinery in the city's South Deering neighborhood.

About 12:30 p.m., Chicago firefighters were alerted about a man who was trapped in a silo at the Horsehead Resource Development Corp., 2701 E. 114th St., near Torrence Avenue, officials said.

The silo contained toxic materials, according to the Fire Department. The man was pulled from the silo and was decontaminated, officials said. He was taken in critical condition to Roseland Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 2:35 p.m., officials said.

The man was identified as Andrew Brundidge, of the 1000 block of South Wentworth Avenue in south suburban Calumet City, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.

According to the company website, the plant is a recycling facility that processes electric arc furnace dust, a steel industry hazardous waste product, into zinc.
