BRIEF: Man dies 3 days after West Side shooting

Sept. 04--A West Side man died three days after he and another man were shot in an attack in the East Garfield Park neighborhood, authorities said Friday.

Craig Bannister, 28, was pronounced dead at 12:04 p.m. Wednesday at Mount Sinai Hospital, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office. Bannister and another man were shot in the 3300 block of West Walnut Street about 4:05 a.m. Sunday, according to police.

The man later identified as Bannister was critically hurt and another man was wounded while they were outside when an unknown attacker approached them and fired shots, police said at the time. Police were called and found the men near each other on the sidewalk,

Both men were taken to Mount Sinai Hospital for treatment, police said. The 28-year-old later identified as Bannister was struck in the head. He initially was listed in critical condition, police said. The second man, age 30, was hit in the left thigh, said Officer Bari Lemmon, a police spokeswoman, on Friday, correcting initial reports that the second man was 38 years old.

No one was in custody in the shooting.
