BRIEF: Man dies 2 days after Little Village shooting

Jan. 29--A 39-year-old man died two days after being shot in the head in the Little Village neighborhood over the weekend, authorities said.

Alexander Villafane, 39, of the 2300 block of South St. Louis Avenue, was pronounced dead at 11:54 a.m. Tuesday at Mount Sinai Hospital, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.

The victim suffered a gunshot wound to the head in the 3500 block of West 24th Street about 12:50 p.m. Sunday, according to police. The man was initially in critical condition after being taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, police said.

The man was on the street standing next to a vehicle, when a minivan drove up, someone inside opened fire, hitting the man, and the van sped off, police said.

No one was in custody.

Police had not been notified of any updates in the case Wednesday evening.
