BRIEF: Man dead after car strikes pole in Beverly

April 23--A 59-year-old man was killed in a car accident early Saturday in the Beverly neighborhood on the Far South Side, police said.

The man was driving about 2:51 a.m. in the 9700 block of South Western Avenue when he crashed into a pole, said Officer Ron Gaines, a Chicago police spokesman.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene, Gaines said.

Early Saturday, police officers blocked off with red tape the eastern sidewalk of Western Avenue north of 98th Street.

Inside the crime scene, a Lexus stood with a smashed front next to a street pole.

No other information about the accident was immediately available.
