5 wounded, 2 critically, in separate shootings

April 09--A woman and man have been critically wounded and three others have been hurt in separate shootings across the city since late Friday morning, according to Chicago police.

Most recently, a 24-year-old man was wounded in a shooting about 2:12 a.m. Saturday in the Bronzeville neighborhood on the South Side, said Officer Ron Gaines, a Chicago police spokesman.

The man was walking in the 4500 block of South Drexel Boulevard when he heard gunshots and was struck, Gaines said.

He was wounded in the arm and was taken to University of Chicago Medical Center, where he was listed in good condition, Gaines said.

About 11:39 p.m. Friday, a 34-year-old man was wounded in a shooting in the Belmont Central neighborhood on the Northwest Side, Gaines said.

The man was standing outside in the 2600 block of North Central Avenue when an unknown vehicle pulled up and someone inside it fired shots, Gaines said.

The man was shot in the buttocks, and he was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where his condition stabilized, Gaines said.

In a shooting in the Humboldt Park neighborhood a 29-year-old man was shot at 8:31 p.m., said Officer Kevin Quaid, a police spokesman. The man was shot in the leg and managed to get himself to Norwegian-American Hospital before being transferred to Stroger Hospital, Quaid said.

The man, whose condition had stabilized, said he was in the 3300 block of West Beach Avenue working on a vehicle when a dark vehicle pulled up and people began shooting. The man is a known gang member, police said.

A 23-year-old woman was shot at 7:03 p.m. in the 5400 block of South Karlov Avenue in the West Elsdon neighborhood, said Quaid.

The woman was shot in the head and was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in critical condition, said Quaid.

Earlier, a man was shot about 11:40 a.m. in the 6800 block of South Prairie Avenue in the city's Park Manor neighborhood, said Officer Jose Estrada, citing preliminary reports.

The 31-year-old man suffered wounds to the arm, head and neck. He was taken in critical condition to Stroger Hospital, Estrada said.

Police were investigating.
